The Invisalign Treatment Process

Invisalign is a popular alternative to traditional metal braces. The clear trays are almost completely invisible, which makes them a great option for both teens and adults. Clear braces can treat most forms of misalignment as successfully as traditional braces.

If you’re interested in clear braces, you should learn about how the process works, so you can make an informed decision about whether they’re the right treatment option for you. At 3V Dental Associates, we’re proud to be one of the leading Invisalign dentists on Long Island, but even more proud to service our local Port Washington community.

How long will treatment take?

The total length of Invisalign treatment depends on how complex or thorough the treatment is. On average, Invisalign treatments last nine to 18 months. However, depending on the severity of the misalignment, the treatment may be much shorter or much longer. After consulting with your 3V Dental Invisalign specialist, you’ll have a better understanding of the estimated treatment timeline.

Adults sometimes need to wear these amazing clear aligners for up to two years. Their teeth and jaws are less responsive, so it takes longer for their teeth to move into the correct alignment.

Wearing Invisalign aligners for the recommended amount of time each day will help the treatment go quickly. In some cases, some teeth will still be slightly out of alignment at the end of the treatment. If this happens to you, your dentist may order a new set of trays and continue with the treatment until those teeth become properly aligned.

How do I get started with Invisalign?

If you’re interested in clear aligners, you may be asking, “How does Invisalign work?” Schedule a free Invisalign consultation today with your favorite 3V dentist to discuss whether you’re a good candidate for clear aligners. Most people qualify for clear braces, but some severe cases of misalignment require traditional braces or other treatments.

If you’re a candidate for Invisalign clear braces, your dentist will take photographs of your teeth and face, X-rays of your teeth and jaw, and impressions of your teeth. He or she will plan exactly how the teeth should move to straighten out. Then, your dentist will send those records and plans to a lab that will create the trays. It usually takes about four weeks to receive the completed trays.

During the treatment, you’ll go through an entire set of trays. Each tray will bring your teeth slightly closer to the final goal. You’ll start with a new tray every two weeks, and the trays will gradually move your teeth closer and closer to the straightened position.

Your dentist will give you detailed instructions for how to take care of your trays and teeth during treatment. You should remove the trays when eating and brushing your teeth. There are usually no restrictions on eating or drinking when you have clear braces, which makes them much more convenient than metal braces.

How often should I wear my Invisalign aligners?

You should wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day, and you should only remove them for eating and brushing your teeth. This will help the teeth align as quickly as possible. If you wear the aligners for less than 20 hours per day, it will take longer for your teeth to shift. If this happens, your dentist may recommend taking more than two weeks with each tray before switching, but this will lengthen your treatment time.

How often do I have to visit my Invisalign dentist?

Most people visit their dentist every four to six weeks, which is the same frequency as with traditional braces. However, appointments with clear braces tend to be much quicker than with metal braces because there are no brackets or wires that need adjusting. The purpose of the appointment is just to make sure there has been progress and to receive the new aligners.
